Due to the word “diet,” drinking diet soda seems like a much healthier alternative to regular soda. Is it really that much healthier than regular soda though? Can diet soda make you gain weight? Does it make you fat? Here are some important things to note about diet soda.

Diet Soda isn’t That Healthy

While diet soda does not contain any calories, this does not mean that it is a healthy choice. It contains sodium, caffeine and artificial sweeteners. Research has shown that sodium and artificial sweeteners can both cause you to gain weight. Caffeine is also thought to be unhealthy when it is consumed excessively.

Diet Soda Makes You Drink More

Another one of the problems with diet soda is that it can cause you to become more thirsty, which will make you want to drink more. If you are turning to a second can or glass of diet soda, you’re increasing your sodium, artificial sweetener and caffeine intake. The sodium in diet soda can cause you to retain water, which ultimately means that you will end up looking bloated by drinking too much.

Just like any other beverage, it is important to keep in mind that you should always drink diet soda in moderation. Even though it has the word “diet” in its name, it does not mean that it is the best beverage for weight loss. Drinking water with lemon or hot tea can be much more beneficial for your diet, as teas, juices and lemonade can all be high in calories, sugar and sodium.
