Running a Fitness Business Like You Don’t Need the Money
I remember back when I was training people out of a gym my Dad would always tell me the same thing over and over again: “Zach, you’re a Great trainer but you’re a Horrible business man.”
How right he was.
You see, I LOVED working out and I LOVED the gym, I just wanted to be amongst the weights, the sound of plates clanking together and barbells dropping was beautiful music to my ears.
I would spend 4 – 6 hours a day in the gym AFTER my own personal workouts and come home with NO money. I told my Dad I loved training so much I didn’t care, I just wanted to help people.
I was doing things MY WAY and heck, living at home, being a college student, having a part time job which DID pay (I earned $8.25 / hr) and not owning one credit card left me with no bills and the easiest life this side of the continent!
But, what happened when I wanted to get a job, or shall I see, NEEDED a job once I became a teacher and needed a Summer Gig. I applied at all these gyms, but something was wrong, every time I applied and left my application with my raving accomplishments of being a bodybuilding champion and holding a BA in Health & Physical Education plus ten years of fitness experience I was the “easy hire.”
But when people tried calling me back I was TOO nervous to answer the phone and bailed out of it before they could even connect with me.
In a nut shell, the thing that scared me was the fact that I would have to do things the way someone else told me how to do them. This scared the sh*t out of me and I basically fired myself before they could even hire me!

I did this for an entire summer and I could have been confused for a gym and beach bum. Truth be told, I HATED being told what to do and FEARED working with clients that I did not want to work with.
The next summer I decided I would train athletes only, more specifically, wrestlers. I would do this in my parents garage, in their backyard and at playgrounds. I got payed NOTHING, again, but, I was working with who I wanted to work with and running MY show.
Yea, I was BIG time. Working for FREE and being my own BOSS. Next step was to hang a sign around my neck that said, “Will Train for Food”
But screw it, I got the wheels turning and was set on doing things my way. Nothing better than being your Own Boss!
Things moved Fast and the money started to come pouring in. I picked up 1 wrestler who payed me $ 5 / workout and trained with me 3 x week. That’s $ 15 buckaroos a week if you can’t do the Math!
Then, the kid I was training for FREE had an older brother who wanted to train with me. It was time to make some SERIOUS CASH and I said to him, “I ain’t cheap, it’s $ 15 bux an hour.”
He lasted for maybe 2 weeks before he went broke…..
People told me to get a job in a “REAL Gym”
I ALMOST listened. Except, I couldn’t muster the horrible feeling in my stomach that would have me working for someone else, with people I didn’t like, telling me what to do, when to do it and how to do it.
I ALMOST quit….
But, the next summer, I bought a house and picked up slightly over 20 clients, some of which traveled over an hour each way to train with me.
Rather than $5 / hr, it became $ 250 / month.
I helped pay for a big chunk of the renovations in the house my wife and I bought, through the training of wrestlers in my garage, my backyard and some playgrounds in the surrounding area.
If I would have listened to everyone else, I would have used credit cards to pay for the house renovations, so instead of being $20, 000 + in debt, I would have likely been closet to $ 100,000 in debt.
Time flew by fast, and a few years later my street was crowded with cars from teenage athletes, too many of which strolled the streets shirtless after their workouts, looking jacked and ripped.
It was time to move on and open a “REAL Gym”. Many people told me NOT to, that it would be too much overhead and run me into debt.
I Almost Listened. Except, I went with my gut instincts and opened a small warehouse gym.
People kept telling me how to run my business, who I should train and how I should schedule everyone.
Guess what…..I LISTENED to them…..
It almost put my business under and I almost quit!
Until one day I said to myself, ‘F**K This!”
I decided to go by my own rules and follow my gut instincts.
Today, my gym operates 2 – 3 hours a day, no weekends and I net close to $ 10 k month.
Aspiring Strength Coaches and dreamers flock to my gym from around the world on a monthly basis to learn what I do.
I feel GREAT because I give them the tools to beat the naysayers, do what they love, help others achieve their dreams and make a lot of money doing all of the above.
I can’t imagine what would have happened if I listened to everyone else and quit.
