The Dangers of Second Hand Smoke
Many people are so health conscious and do their best to practice a healthy lifestyle. They don’t drink, smoke, they exercise and eat healthy foods and they do get enough sleep. They consider themselves healthy and they are confident enough they won’t catch any health diseases later in life. However, it comes as a shock to some people when they later find out they have lung cancer. It becomes a puzzle to them as they can assure they never have smoked a day in their lives. What do you think happened? Why did they finally acquire this dreadful disease? One of the examples of this is the widow of the late Christopher Reeve, Dana Reeve. She was diagnosed with lung cancer but swears she has never smoked a day in her life. The culprit to this maybe second hand smoke. Second hand smoke from smokers emit carcinogens that can be inhaled by the people around them. There are also some products at home that may contain harmful substances which has poisonous effects to the human body.

Everytime a smoker lights up a cigarette and smokes it, the people around him are in danger of exposure to second hand smoke. This results to inhalation of the pollutants from tobacco that is spread in the air. According to the American Lung Association, this smoke contains around 40 toxic chemicals which are linked to cancer. These toxic chemicals include carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, benzone, among others. Non-smokers inhale these harmful substances to the body which is one of the reasons why we should not be near to the people who are smoking. The smoke is also irritating and itchy to the throat. This condition is one way of the lungs telling us that we are inhaling substances which are harmful to the body and which should be avoided.
Our daily exposure to some chemicals contained by the many products being used in our houses and in our workplaces may also bring with them harmful effects to the body. Many people may not be aware of this and the risk daily is increasing. The more we are exposed to these substances, the higher is our chances of experiencing the ill-effects of second-hand smoke. Smoke emitted from factories are also harmful to the body. It is necessary that we choose to live away from these buildings. This kind of smoke can also trigger asthma attack in children.

It is important that we educated ourselves of the harmful effects of second-hand smoke. The diseases that they will bring later in life can be avoided if only we practice the necessary precautions.
