You’ve probably seen ads and infomercials for products such as the Neckline Slimmer which the makers claim can fix a double chin. The Neckline Slimmer is a handy little device that fits under your chin and moves up and down when your head moves – supposedly giving your jaw and chin a workout. The makers of this product claim you can reduce or eliminate a double chin by using the Neckline Slimmer only two minutes a day – all for only $19.99. No doubt thousands of women are pulling out their credit cards in hopes of getting a slender new facial profile. Do double chin exercises really work?

A Double Chin Fix?: What Causes a Double Chin?

The maker of the Neckline Slimmer would have you believe you can slim and tone a double chin in much the same way you tone any other muscle – through exercise. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way. A double chin comes from too much fat being stored underneath the jawline. Some people have a genetic tendency to accumulate fat in this area, and they can develop a double chin with even small amounts of weight gain. Other people carry around a double chin because they’re overweight. Still others have a weak chin anatomically which makes even small amounts of fat under the jaw look more prominent.

Can Exercise Fix a Double Chin?

Just like you can’t zap fat from your abdominal region by doing sit-ups, you can’t get rid of a double chin through jaw and neck exercises. The only way exercise can fix a double chin is by exercising hard enough to reduce overall body fat, so there’s less of it to store under the jawline. Some people can completely lose a double chin through weight loss, while others continue to have one at a normal weight because of genetics. Either way, you’re better off tackling a double chin through aerobic exercise rather than using a double chin fix such as the Neckline Slimmer.

Are There Other Ways to Fix a Double Chin?

A double chin can be corrected through selectively suctioning the fat underneath the jaw through a procedure similar to liposuction. The drawback is this procedure causes significant bruising which can take several weeks to completely disappear. People who have weak chins can have both liposuction – to remove excess fat – and a chin implant to make the chin appear more prominent. Some people who have skin laxity due to aging may need a partial face lift procedure to completely fix a double chin.

Double Chin Fix: The Bottom Line?

The best way to fix a double chin is to lose weight overall. If that fails to correct the problem, there are surgical options available if the problem is one you can’t live with. Whatever you do, don’t waste your money on “double chin fixes” such as the Neckline Slimmer. They don’t work.
