It can be a struggle eating healthy when you’re not involved in the food preparation. Restaurants are notorious for adding too much salt, fat, and calories to their creations, and most of the time you’re not even aware of it because they don’t post nutritional information. Fortunately, some restaurants are changing their approach and adding more healthy items to the menu. An example is Bob Evans Restaurant. They recently added some new “fit” items to their breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu – so you can eat out with a little less guilt.

Breakfast at Bob Evans: Healthy New Breakfast Options?

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and what can you get that’s healthy? For breakfast, Bob Evan’s Restaurant offers a fresh fruit cup and fruit plate with a low-fat yogurt dip that features a tantalizing selection of melons, citrus fruits, and grapes. They can also make you a veggie omelet that has only 272 calories.

How do they keep the calories so low? They have their own cholesterol free egg blend that’s lower in calories and fat than fresh eggs. The highest calorie item on their new fit menu is a fruit and yogurt crepe served with a cup of Quaker oatmeal. It has 616 calories and is still high in fat at 17 grams, but it should prove to be quite filling.

Lunch at Bob Evans: It Won’t Make You Feel Guilty

The fit additions for lunch include a new apple-cranberry spinach salad that’s topped with a reduced fat raspberry vinaigrette. This salad is loaded with vitamins and phytonutrients including juicy red apples, tart cranberries, and raw spinach. They’re thrown in some toasted, candied pecans for added protein and good fats. If you eat this as an entrée, the calories are reasonable at 389.

They also offer a spinach, tomato, and chicken pasta with 526 calories. The calories can be reduced by asking them to hold the parmesan cheese and by only eating half the pasta. You can also get three tasty soups that are under 200 calories, but be aware that they’re little high in sodium if you’re watching your salt intake.

Dinner at Bob Evans: Three Satisfying, Healthy Selections

Bob Evans has added three new fit dinner options that are all under five hundred calories. (including side dishes). These include a potato-crusted flounder dish, a grilled salmon fillet, and a grilled chicken breast. Each is served with a baked potato and a serving of broccoli. The two fish dishes are a great way to get heart-healthy omega-3’s and the broccoli gives extra cancer fighting punch to a meal. To make it even healthier, skip the baked potato and ask for two orders of broccoli instead. These three are some of the healthier offerings you’ll find at a chain restaurant.

The Bottom Line?

These Bob Evans healthy selections are a good option when you’re too tired to cook. Some are a little high in salt, but Bob Evans uses no trans fat or monosodium glutamate when they prepare them. It sounds like a change for the better.
